The truth? As ranching and farming fell victim to unregulated business and economics, they had to learn other skills in order to provide for their families. Being a rancher "back in the day" meant you were the unsung hero for hard work, decency, and integrity. Rather than resort to, or contribute toward corruption in the system, they took of the spurs, hung up their saddles, but kept the spirit of the cowboy alive when they took jobs in industry; knowing how to keep the wheels turning, and knowing when to let nature take it's course. Recognising and helping his fellow man who also had nothing left but pride; knowing respect comes through civility, and having a quiet tongue. Cowboys are still doing their thing; they took it from the ranch to the streets.

Farming and ranching are still alive and well, you just can't see that from the highway. You have brood mares still selling over 500,000 as three and four year olds, and stallions selling for millions. Im not talking just about race horses. Millions, heck billions are made and paid out in horse events like cutting barrel racing roping team penning and reining events and rodeos. A standard decent barrel horse can bring more than 30,000. Well broke ranch horses even more. Cowboying is doing just fine. Picking the fake from the real McCoy really aint to tough, just look at his boots and hat, enough said.

All the REAL Cowboys are in Oklahoma. There might be a few slummin in Texas, but thats just because its so close to Oklahoma.

PS: Riding a bull in a rodeo doesnt make you a cowboy, a circus preformer maybe, but a cowboy, no I dont think so.

all THE COWBOYS ARE WHERE? 17 years breaking those nags, 7 AQHA Nationl chanpions in the familly, rodeo's, horse shows, and shoveling shit outta stahls. The real cowboys are scattered all over the USA. You can tell we're the one limping around with all them broken bones, finallly broke up enought to figure out it was time to quit.
$300 Stetson, $200 Brooks and Dunn shirt, 57 chevy hub cap for a belt buckle, and a pair of nike tennie pumps do not a cowboy make!

Added:
Boy do I agree with you daddy - I broke horses in the 60's down in NC...The mountains. I have no idea what they did with them afterwards as I t was not my business. My job was done. Now tho I get mail from some in Co, Texas OK and other states out west dep-ending on the time of year. They make contact depending on mares foal .

Haha, real cowboys in the okie, now that's funny!!!! Texas sucks and oklahoma blows, and cowboys from there I have heard do both??? But you are right, slappin a bull outta gate don't make you a cowboy, niether does slinging a rope at your local arena. Definition of cowboy, one who works watches doctors cows and in the end hates them. Very few can tell the difference between breeds of cows, a brown cow is a brown cow to most dressing in the cowboy style. Cowboy is who you are, not what you are when it comes right down to it. Cowboys in oklahoma bahwahaaa!!!!

I have run into a few in my time. They are in this area, there are cattle ranches and plenty of horses and trails for riding. I guess most of them have other jobs besides running the ranch, I doubt they can make it on that alone? It is a dying breed though! I use to be a cowgirl myself.
actually in thinking about it my neighbor is one, he has many many Texas longhorns calfing out now and some beautiful Watusi cattle. He raises goats that he rents out for land clearing and several horses at his place. He is one beaten up man, walks with a limp, the look on his face of someone who has been in the outdoors for many years, beautiful ranch house, wow I want to be him.

Well, let's all go trail riding in the West for an indefinite period of time. Hell, we might even have a re-enactment of "The Ox-Bow Incident".

Trucker dude. What the heck. If all the real cowboys are in Utah, then why are you driving a truck instead of doctoring a calf. It is calveing season after all.

So climb back in that truck of yours, put the coyboy hat on straight, kick the dust from the parking lot off those cowboy boots. You know, the ones your wearing right now, the ones without the spur heel. Grind those gears and hit the open road.
