My definition of 'High Maintenance': A person who is self-absorbed with their own self-importance.

They take. They are so focused on 'self' that they have nothing to contribute to a healthy relationship. Everything is about 'them.'

Just my opinion.

In my opinion there can also be high maintenance men.
High maintenance is definitely a person who is not about giving or being a partner.

This is a person who feels that they are the center of the universe and should be your pampered and spoiled project. And many feel a sense of entitlement to being "special".

Whether their requirements are:
materialistic demands.
Time or attention demands.
Money, cars, affluence, hair dressers, designer labels, jewels, etc.,

Whatever.

It's also been my opinion that these individuals generally are lacking the ability or desire to find some fulfillment within themselves.

They don't know how to equip themselves against on their own merits, talents or abilities to end being needy or wanting more or pulling and tugging and forcing another individual to give to them...a great indication of high maintenance is to determine can this person stand on their own two feet and live well and comfortably?

They appear to have a hole within them that acts as a vortex or drain pulling everything good given to them out instead of filling them up.

As a result of the emptiness they feel inside they continue to seek more, or bigger to fill that internal aching void.

Sad but very true.
Also can be called shallow or materialistic, demanding...etc.,

gonesailing pretty much sums it up. Interesting how many different views there are of this term "high maintenance". I usually think of a high maintenance person as one who uses / needs / wants a lot of makeup (men and women). Now I know there are many other ways people see and feel about this term. For a moment I had this vision of an airline mechanic smoking some wacky tobaccy

I agree with most that have posted on this subject. I tend to avoid the self-proclaimed high maintenance or women that I deem as such. It is just a personal preference of mine.

Good answer Gonesailing.

I do have a friend that is self supporting but I deem her high maintenance. Although I love her I can only handle seeing her a few times a year. When she comes to my farm to ride she is fully made up, hair styled and wearing jewelry. If money is tight she with her hair and nails done even if she hasn't paid her phone bill. It's very challenging for her to get anywhere on time as she is always primping. Although she doesn't mind helping others she is always "negotiating" to do things that are most convenient for herself. Mutual friends and I find it exhausting. About 2 years ago I started saying, "I'm sorry if the time, place, agenda_______(fill in the blank) don't work for you. We'll miss you.

High Maintenance to me is it takes a lot of money and personal attention to keep her (running). Just like an antique or sports car. Expensive hobbies
