| Luvin'....all of you...my God, what timing. My youngest was diagnosed w/ ADHD/ODD in September, but any parent of a child can tell you when something else is wrong. With education background and experience working w/ special needs kids, his dr. (that has a 9 year old diagnosed as Autistic) has had one evaulation done & has requested a second iq testing & is leaning toward Asperbergers/PDD. The OT that tested him said his writing skills were so rough because he is ambidextrious & also noted that only X amount of people in the world are that bright, going on to say this child needs placement in GT as many of his behaviors are indicitive of high intellengent people.
His 504 conference is tomorrow & I have no idea what all I need or who to talk to. His school has been remarkable with him. They recognize his need to calm himself & back out of overwhelming situations & monitor and adjust.
He reads @ level 8. His kindergarten class norm and expectation is level 2. I put ALL knives & all tools out of his way so he doesn't harm himself or take something important apart. My bedroom door jam for example...he took the screws out so I wouldn't be scared @ night & could get to him to make ME feel better.
He has major sensory issues & as I read above...when he goes into overload, he dives head first. He can't help it anymore than a person that has a missing limb or anyhing else. The people that matter don't mind, the people that mind don't matter, but there are times it is a struggle being a single mom alone. There are lessons in everthing.
There is also a book called A Mind @ A Time by Mel Levine. He was on Oprah a few years back & made a huge impression on me. I picked it up on half.com fairly cheap. It isn't written specifically for austistic kids, but different things in it will have you shaking your head & saying yeah & reaching for a sharpie to go back & highlight this & that.
Anywho...short story long, please keep me posted if Dustin agrees to an autism forum & good luck. Please stay in touch with us, one & all.
I'll gladly add my email to a list for this.
And yes. He is a beautiful child. Aren't all of ours such?

| Dyezah, I have just sent you a private email concerning our children...I hope all of us on this thread will become a support group for each other. We can share info, new laws and support each other when the head banging or behaviour become to much for us to cope with. Some days it is just very hard...You have to love these children though. And yes, they are very intelligent!!!!!
