Last night, after a particularly good run playing pool, I was asked by one of the better players if I wanted to join his pool league!

I love the game, never thought I was consistent enough, but that's a huge boost to my ego.

Of course, I will!

Play starts in a month, and I've got a lot of practice ahead of me.

Anyone else here like to play pool?

Yahoo pool? No.

Played 11 games yesterday. Lost 3. One right on the break. Only the second time I've seen the 8ball sunk on the break.

Er, that's rather hard to do. Nice way to win a game, though!

Yup. Sinking the 8 ball on the break is an automatic win according to "bar rules".

However, not so according to the BCA or WPA.

Do not ever argue house or bar rules in a bar or tavern. It is the way it is and if you don't like it, you can play elsewhere.

pool player here

my only problem with house rules is they're rarely posted.then the bartender tells you whatever the 'regular' said is right.never play for more than a drink unless rules are posted.

Yup. Sinking the 8 ball on the break is an automatic win according to TAP, APA, and "bar rules".

However, not so according to the BCA or WPA.

Do not ever argue house or bar rules in a bar or tavern. It is the way it is and if you don't like it, you can play elsewhere.

The reason for the "8 ball on break wins" in "bar rules" is obvious: it has to be the last ball pocketed in 8 ball, and can't be if it already is on the break -- play can't continue without reracking and, as most bars and taverns have "pay tables" this requires paying again.

"Bar rules" require that every bank, kick,, kiss, and combo be called, i.e. "3 off the 5 in the corner pocket". League rules simply require the object ball and pocket to be specified.

League rules determine choice of group by balls sunk on the break, but "bar rules" require you to "prove" it.

Sometimes, league players in a bar will agree to League or bar rules among themselves, though this is the choice of whoever owns the table, as are variations (such as "ball in hand", "called shots", etc.) Best to not argue if you're the incoming player.

Billiards is really a gentleman's game, and I've played some very nice games of pool in some otherwise questionable bars.

i agree with it being a gentleman's game.most are in it for the fun of it.i don't like the 'picky' rules if i'm out havin a good time.i don't want to watch so closely to see if they bumped something.

Yeah, it's a fun game. I'm not a "tough" guy, but I've played a few games of "stick" in some pretty tough bars and it was "all good".

I always cut a newbie, or a lady who isn't very good, a lot of slack. Generally, I let the ladies who want to "try it" play slop and let them retake shots if there isn't a big line for the table, and I'm a regular.

No, duh!

And, if you're new to the place, you will lose a few games, according to some "rule". Part of becoming a regular. No big deal.
