Hi ya onelife.I have had to kill lots of animals being a farmer and never enjoyed it once, the only thing that got me through it was that they were all mercy kills.I know that if i had to kill a animal for survial i could do it,but i have no intrest in doing it because i havent been faced with that kind of survial yet.I will never hold anything againt a hunter, because i have many friends that do it but i always try to give them a hard time about it.In return for my harrasment they fell the need to tell me about all the animals they wounded and got away.I am also a p*ssy when it comes to killing a animal, but i do enjoy a good elk steak.
As for my son i really dont think i will ever let him see me hurt a animal if i can help it.

Cool Homesteder....I spent many years on a farm and you see senceless death and you realize death is supposed to be random...not intentional....hunting around here has turned so commercial..I loved Maine...remote..I wouldn't see anyone..for days...here there is a truck every mile and people walk right up on you...I only hunt with a bow now...I'll shut up...

To me onelife,a bow hunter is the ture form of hunting.Sure maybe most of the time you are sitting in a tree waiting for them to come to you but at least you can see the whites of there eyes when you do get them.I have been on a few hunts before just being there for the (bonding) and coughing when we did see a animal so i didnt get invited back to many times. When they did get one it sure seemed like a lot of work to drag it out of the woods and then pay someone $400 to cut and wrap it.
It has to be about being in the out doors and with nature. It used to be people would hunt to fill the freezer but now a days it just doesnt pay.

You are right homesteader, It no longer pays, I can't do it anymore as I am now like you, hate to see them die...I am an outdoors person, love nature and totally love the nature and sights. My farm consists of trying to keep the deer away from the corn...lol cant do it but we plant a bit extra for the deer...I do love the fawns!!

I am sorry about the probs here, but appreciate this thread as many of us have come to realize there are many things we have in common...OP thank you.

I hate to turn this into an all out huntin thread but I was raised "redneck" huntin.....we shot every damn thing....granted we did eat it but......if that sumb*tch was a deer it was dead.....here you can still run dogs and about tha only way to stop a walker dog runnin a deer is to drop tha hammer....well I lost tha thrill of shootin small bucks and does. And got turned on to tha bow and man.....anybody that tells me they draw a bow back on a deer that thier heart aint pumpin is a liar. I process all my own meat and its less than 15 dollars per deer round about but as much as I liked deer steaks its about tha thrill of tha kill

I missed a bear 3 times with a bow!...Sucked...high every time...the last time I missed the bear didn't even run...No noise just a stick hitting the ground...that was a long walk out of the woods...a mile and a half to my truck at dusk in thick pines....

I grew up in backwoods south Georgia, and was taken hunting as far back as I can remember, I never liked it, but I learned how to handle and respect a gun. All the kids in my family have learned the same thing. However, when my oldest son was 14 he and two friends of his were at a hunting lodge that belonged the other boys Grandfather, and the 'city slicker' that had never been taught about guns, accidentally shot my son, it was with buck shot and he took most of the load in his knee, he did however have shot all over his body, he almost died. Many surgeries and 96 days later and most of which were spent in intensive care, he was sent home. He is now 32 and walks with a bad limp and is exploring surgical options.
Does he hunt today? All the time, where they live they have permits to hunt deer year around because they eat up the crops. He donates nearly all he kills to the local feed the homeless program, which feeds not only the homeless, but inmates in the county jail.
So I have mixed reactions on this hunting thing, kids need to be taught about guns, but it is up to the Parents and caregivers to decide when and how much. There are also many grown people that could use a refresher course.

My grandmother gave me my first gun when I was 5, and my granddaughter will get the same gun when she is 5, my daughters have both owned guns since they were 5. And I was an avid hunter until I came back from Vietnam, yet I've never had the heart to kill bambi.
The rule was you eat whatever you shot nothing went to waste. I don't know what age is good to teach a kid to hunt, but no kid in my family will ever get older than 5 before they learn about guns, and learn to shoot, everyone should know the capabilites of a gun and how not to use it, and when to use it. If you don't believe that you haven't been where I have. There is an old saying I belive, you can take you kid hunting or spend your time hunting you kid.JMO

MY dad taught my brother and me how to shoot started with RED RYDER}bb guns then when we were about 8 yrs old started takeing us hunting with him [SMALL GAME ] we had to wait untill we were 12 yrs old to go [big game] DEER. when we started small game hunting he gave us each 1 shotgun shell if we shot at something and missed we carried an empty shotgun around untill the end of the day. You soon learn only to take killing shots. hes gone now but his lessons will allways be with me .----LUCAS

Well if I would not have let him take her when younger it would never have happened as he passed away 2 years ago when she was 8 years old. He never shot anything when she was with him and she has seen death anyway!

My grandson began hunting at the age of 4. He loves it. But, his dad and grandfather never killed anything, they were teaching him the art of the hunt. He is now 12 and loves hunting and last thanksgiving he killed his first turkey..
