| Proper age for bonding, or hunting?
Bonding should be from day 1. Hunting, well that's open for debate. I know in West Virginia everyone I know hunts and it's tradition. I have friends who have taken their youngins (maybe not 4) out to the tree stand where they would just sit and talk about stuff (bonding). I went out with my dad when I was 9. We had guns, saw lots of deer and squirrels but we didn't shoot anything. We observed nature. My dad talked and taught and I listened and asked questions. I have cousins that have brought home bucks at the age of 8 and was considered a rite of passage.
So is it bonding? Absolutely. Is there an age limit? If there is intention to actually bring down game then I would say 4 is too young. But not for bonding.

| Nothing whatsoever wrong with that, I started hunting with my grandfather at the age of 6. My 12 yr old daughter has been hunting with me since she was 5.

| Sorry, I couldn't answer without bias because I hate hunting and all that goes with it. And yes, I know all the reasons we need to have hunting. It's just that I personally want nothing to do with it. I'm in the heart of hunting country, my nephew took his son hunting and he was only 2!! Idiot. I couldn't believe one day I was in Wally World and saw this plastic toy jeep with a dead dear strapped across the hood and two hunters in the driver and passenger seat!! My ex husband hunted only to put meat in the freezer (I wouldnt eat it thereby influencing my kids) and between that and myself my son was raised that way. My ex said I was going to "ruin" him with my beliefs. WRONG, he would and is capable of hunting and killing for food if he HAD to, but otherwise he has no interest at all and doesnt believe in it. He will eat deer meat though.

| I learned to shoot a 22 when I was 7. The rifle was small enough for me to handle, and my Dad was a cop and wanted to show us how to defend ourselves and to hunt.
So no..I see nothing wrong with that. Shooting a gun and hunting was the only thing my Dad and I ever sharred.....

| Copper, I understand those who are against hunting and that's all good. I hunt because I enjoy nature, 99% of the time I only sit and enjoy the peace and beauty of the outdoors, rarely do I even attempt a shot at anything....I guess I have mellowed with age... but having said that, it is my right to hunt and it is also your right to be against it..

| ge0ge0,
Yes I think 4 is a bit young as well...here in pa I waas hunting at 12...I think the current law is 13, but it was a right of passage as you said. I know a LOT of ppl are against it, but when you are poor and a farmer you hunt for food. My dad, older brother and I would hunt pheasant and rabbit...I never went deer hunting here. The city people here, or at least my EX is so afraid of guns, and to me they are nothing. My daughter knows how to handle a weapon and is not afraid of them, but has a huge respect for them. I guess shooting the 357 taught her that...LOL She wanted to sooooooo. I also agree that bonding starts at day 1 if not before. I would talk close to my wifes belly when she was pregnant in the hopes that the children would hear and recognize my voice...
Have a wonderful day all

| I could very easily be a vegetarian. I'm not against hunting, believe me the way a deer is killed is alot more humane than the way cows are killed that are in our grocery stores! After the last beef scare I have seriously stayed away from it. I'm saying I could not personally pull the trigger and end that life. That's just me. Don't think that means I'm a PETA nut nor that I'm a wimp. I could pull the trigger on a HUMAN without a second thought. And yeah I own guns.
Hunting around here is like some glorified ritual or religion. It's sad. To pull up and sit at a store with a dead carcass on your hood? To equate hunting with manhood? To make toys relating to it? Geesh how many times we have hit deer during open season because the quacks have them so stirred up they are oozing from every nook and cranny imaginable. How many dogs do I have to put up with running crazy across my pasture? To bait a field? Come on now, thats like me throwing a steak on the grill and waiting like a sniper for you to come up. It's always all over the radio here. Stores geared toward it, clothes, competitions. Hunt thats your right, but don't make it some national holiday! Killing is killing, there is nothing glorious about it. Bragging about a kill turns my stomach. Hunting is fine if it's what it was meant to be by our forefathers. To put food on a table. You want to hunt for the sake of keeping the population down and disease from running rampant (since WE upset the natural balance) One on one with a deer (archery) would be fair. You want to hunt that animal, do it like a true hunter, ( a real man) not a sniper

| Copper, I think you have it right. To kill and not for food is totally wrong in my book. I see ppl here do it all the time. We have hunts to kill because the deer p-opulation is so large that the poor city people hit the deer, so of course, even though they P an M over the hunting the herd has to be cut down...I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT!! You moved out here to enjoy the country, well guess what - the wonderful and loving animals were here long before you!! Get real. The developments we see going up and ruining Bucks County are ruining the habitat for the animals!! Golly, I wish we could put up a wall (like China??) and stop ppl from moving here. Oh and to avoid bashing, I was born and raised here on a farm!

| I agree artist. They are not mentally capable of understanding the hunting concept. How traumatic must it be for them to hear that loud gunshot and see the blood and death? Geesh..and then I can just hear ole Bubba say in a loud estatic voice, "ya got em son, ya got em!" When my son was about 5 or 7 a friend of my husbands took him with him hunting in the woods behind the house. My son tagged behind with his bb gun. The friend came back very upset telling me that he and my son stooped down behind some bushes. They waited there for a while and when some ducks, geese whatever flew across, he shot one. He turned to look and my son had the gun pointed on him asking "why did you do that?"
