| Growing up as a child , there were many tales and folklores that were connected to the neighborhood where I lived , just as in many other cities across the country. But I will always remember the history and tale surrounding my childhood neighborhood.
I lived in what is known as the Southeast side of Cleveland , which is where an area
known as "Kingsbury Run" is located. Back in the mid 1930's through the early 1940's , "The Mad Butcher of Kingsbury Run" murdered and butchered twelve people by decapitating them and then severing their bodys in half. The "Butcher" was believed to have been responsible for many more murders including the bodys found in "Murder Swamp" (located in Erie , PA ). The "Mad Butcher" was never found or identified , and the case remains unsloved to this day. Elliot Ness of the "Untouchables" fame investigated the case while serving as Law Director of Cleveland at the time. Although he never officially solved the case , Ness believed that he knew the identity of the "Mad Butcher".
I remember my grandmother saying to me ,"stay away from Kingsbury Run. The Mad Butcher might get you". My grandmother was a young lady at the time the "Mad Butcher" was committing his crimes. And I also remember my mother telling me "don't go near that sideaway bridge!Thats where the ghost of the Mad Butcher of Kingbury Run roams!". This tale really scared the crap out of us as kids , and it was meant to keep us out of Kingsbury Run. Once in awhile , we would get the courage to walk up to the Sideaway bridge and peer down into Kingsbury Run. But we always ran away at the first sound. We did'nt want the "Mad Butcher" seeing who we were. But what frightened us most is that the tale was actually true. I remember those childhood days and tales , and I smile at how innocent those days were. Anybody else have any good childhood tales?
