When you receive an email that appears to have been writtten by someone from another country, or poorly communicated sentences - is it rude to ask if English is their first language?

Some I receive are just impossible to decipher...?

Why is that?

And what do I respond?

I don't see it as rude; just as saying No thank you. I've always worked around other mationalities and most understand that their english may not be up to "stanard" Many in fact like the chance to expand thier english skills.

Maybe they are using an online translator. If they can't speak or communicate effectively, they are either dumb or scammers. Either one should be avoided.

The second language in many countries is English. Most of the semi educated people of foreign nationality, as in High School, have taken English classes and are capable of communicating in English.

As far as a response, I usually send a short hello and see where it leads. You just never know the truth until a few E mails have been exchanged. Usually you'll start getting form letters and they will have near perfect grammar. Ask them specific questions and see what comes back.

Next? Do you really want to date or correspond with someone you can't understand? I mean it's bad enough that women and men that use the same language can't always understand each other. Do you really want to complicate this with a language barrier as well? (Note: Questions are hypothetical and not directed at the OP.)

of coarse it's not rude to ask, if you don't how can you communicate, but if you know it's not their first language you can work things out, if they bail out when you ask it's probably a scam

I've had many from out of the country contact me....all say from within the states...but not. They all come back at some point asking me for money. The ones in Africa....I RUN FOR THE HILLS NOW. NOT GOING THERE WITH ANYMORE OF THOSE GUYS. Tired of being asked for money over and over again....lol. They just don't get it either....they just keep comming back and trying again. Dumb A**'s....just don't learn when you say no...not gonna happen. is there problem?

Those that I've spoken with....all have good English skills. I've been contacted by one on this site that didn't have good grammer. Got upset and said I didn't want because he was black. Whatever. I do have my standards and know for the most part what I want...but there is SOME flexabilty also. Just not as much as it would take for some who contact me. And the "thanks but no thanks"...most I've found do appreciate your responding and letting them know. So nobody wastes their time.

But as far as being rude....just my opinion....but I don't think it is. How else will you know if you don't ask.

About 2 weeks ago a man from Naples emailed me. He was a nice looking man. First name "Don". I read his profile and he claimed to be
American Indian who was an engineer. It was apparent from his profile and the very limited amount of communication he was probably from another country. I doubt the picture was of him or that there was a drop of American Indian in the gentleman in the posted photo. I did politely ask "where" he was originally from as it appeared that English was not his first language. He did not answer any of my questions but kept up a litany about his willingness to move for the right woman, etc....The usual nonsense. Of course an educated, engineer with underage kids is going to pick up and relocate for the "right woman".....ugh.

I don't' think it's wrong to inquire about someone's place of origin. I also believe it's perfectly right to be suspicious "if" you get a funny vibe about the person who is writing to flag him/her. I've received emails from people that claim to be educated and they are barely literate. If you pay attention and are not in a rush the truth generally reveals itself.

The Nigerian Scam is rampant on Craiglist where I currently have a classified posted. I boldly state I do not reply to out of country inquiries.

All of these people are coming to this country for "humanitarian work" or to attend school. The most recent "lady" claimed she was looking to rent a home in AZ. replied, wrong state, this is GA. She actually wrote back she made a mistake, she MEANT GA. I reported her....
