Edit: Their purpose is to add emotion to otherwise bland, senseless words. It is a tool to help sense someone's response and mood. I think that may have led to their assumed name of emoticons.

| you can block the emoticons and all pictures just right click over the emoticons and you will see a dropdown menu. select block images from datehookup, poof, like magic, they disappear
