| I love my machine...it's a dinosaur, but it's my dinosaur...and right now it's giving me fits. Please confine answers to simple things that a user with only low average tech knowledge (i.e., me, lol) can understand.
The problem: When I try to go to certain websites, notably www.lightspeed.com, www.tracfone.com, and several others, Windows sends me the message "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem..." and shuts down all my windows. It does the same thing if I try to move too quickly...like if I try to use the "down" bar on the right before the page is fully loaded, and that's in hotmail.
When I click on the button to see the nature of the problem, it says it's with Flash 9.0.
I've gone to Adobe to see if they offer a solution...they don't. I've uninstalled and reinstalled...no help. I read somewhere that it was a registry problem...I use Eusing (free) registry cleaner...still no help.
So, I'm turning to the folks who probably know!

Thanks!

| The techie guys would benefit from knowing your operating system, Windows XP, HOME or PRO, Windows ME, (gawd I hope you are not running that) or Windows 98.
Do you know the basics of your computer?
Are you running IE and what version?
Are you running Firefox?
Have you run previous versions of the program you are attempting to run?
Have you tried to restore your system to a previous date, before all the
problems started?
You can learn a lot about your system, by downloading a free INVENTORY
program www.belarcadvisor.com.
This will give you a complete picture of everything that runs on your computer.
What versions, hotfixes, amount of RAM, product keys and so forth.

| Ok, for the techie guys (and you are one, lol...got lost reading about the hotmail thing):
My machine was built for me in '99; I have an AMD 500 processor. It is too slow to run a lot of programs. I'm currently showing about 13.5/20 gigs of RAM available.
I'm running Win XP SP2, IE 7, no Firefox.
I'm not attempting to run a program, just log onto sites that have flash grafix.
Sys restore is a wash...it tells me I have restore points, but after going through 40 of them and being told "The system cannot be restored to this point. No changes...", I gave up.
And I will download the belarc program.
Thanks again.

Update: went to belarc. They have a menu running down the left side including: Belarc Advisor Download, Belarc Advisor Free Download, Belarc advisor, PC audit, PC Audits, Free download, Free downloads, Software download, Computer download, Computer, Belarc monitor, Program Download, Download, Downloads and PC. On the right, it lists "sponsored results" for each category, but Belarc Advisor Download shows no results and Belarc Advisor Free Download offers GooglePack, clearapps, free mp3's, etc.

Update to the update: Googled, found the right site, downloaded version 7.2x. Ran it. Since I'm not sure how to access it again, I'm keeping it up. Two points to note: It said it would only take a few seconds to create the profile...it took 7 minutes. Also, forgot to mention (me ), the OS was originally Win 2000. After two years of disuse, I could only bring it up in "safe mode;" apparently, 2000 had become so corrupted as to be unusable and I did not have the original program disc, so my local guru installed XP. Some of my files survived the transfer, some (most notably music files) did not.
Net result of profile: virus protection and security updates are up-to-date.
One more time, thanks for the help...

| okay let's look at your stuff so far..
You had windows 2000, and I hope your tech did a clean install
(formatted your hard drive, and did a new full install of Windows XP.
Is it *HOME or PRO*? Did he leave you the disc? Do you have the product key?
PRO has more features that are helpful. Like invite a friend to help you via the internet.
I think I read you stated, 13 gigs of ram...hummm I do not think that is possible...
I have 2 or 3 gigs of ram, on a machine that is 3 years old.
In 99 I do not think that was possible...
your *mother board* may have restrictions..
one of my computers, the one I am using right now..
7 or 8 years old, has 512 MB of ram..that is maximum...or I would have more.
It is my stand by machine. My laptop is in at Toshiba for repairs again!!!
Did you find the FREE version of Belarc Advisor and install it?
Go to TWO COWS.com and see if they have a version advisor...I think they do...
it is on my other machine. They have a new service that will tell you what version you
have, and what is available, with a link to download the current version.
Also www.download.com may have some downloads for you.
Start with that, and maybe one of our techies will come on board with more.

| I did download the Belarc advisor.
I have XP Home...Windows Live has the remote assistance feature, though.
Do not have disc(s).
"13.61 Gigabytes Hard Drive Free Space" pasted from Belarc profile...I thought this was RAM, but must not be. "500 megahertz AMD K6 3D; 64 kilobyte primary memory cache; 1024 kilobyte secondary memory cache" pasted from profile re: processor. "128 Megabytes Installed Memory; Slot '0' is Empty; Slot '1' has 64 MB; Slot '2' has 64 MB" pasted from profile re: Memory Modules.
Waiting until the weekend is not a problem, and I really appreciate your help.
Thanks!

| If you do not have the disc....
how do you recover in case of a disaster?
Do you have a program that will reveal the product code key?
Did he give you a key code? If a friend, please ask him for it.
You really need this vital information, in case of
a reinstall necessary...
Have you cleaned out all your junk files and temp files that are taking
up space? Have you defragged this week or month?
You might be able to free up some additional space.
After cleaning out the junk files, then a fresh back up is a good idea.
Do you back up your machine and create a restore point?
Start, programs, assessories, look for system tools, and you can create
a *restore point*. Be sure you have restore turned on.
Now, after you have a current working restore point..the techie guys can
help you with the new edition of your required/requested software.

| I guess he assumed that if I crashed, I'd take it back to him.
I use registry cleaner, disk clean-up and defrag weekly.
Created a restore point before each installation, but as I said, it says it can't restore the system to any of them.
Standing by...Thanks again.

| oh oh..Please check and make sure you have restore turned ON...
Perhaps a program turned it off? I found mine had been turned off last week.
by some unknown program, on this old machine.
If you crash, you are in serious trouble...
no disc, no product key, what if he moved or left the face of the earth??
Do you have Windows genuine Advantage privileges for updates?
They will verify if your product is genuine, before allowing updates.
There will be 4 updates released next Tuesday, as I am told in a newsletter.
Do you have all the current updates in-place, that you want?
Do you have NORTON by chance?
Would your firewall block your download and install of the # 9? did you disable the
firewall you do have for the installation?

| *restore is on
*I do have genuine Advantage
*all my updates are current per Belarc
*do not have Norton...have Avast! (Norton costs $$)
*no, 9.0 shows to be installed in good order, and my firewall doesn't stop the MS updates or Avast!
Thanks again.

| Something that you may wish to consider.....since you do not have much hd space you can get an external hd for backup...you can Ghost your system to it and if your computer gets infected or hd goes out you will have your system on the external hd to reinstall like it was...lots faster and easier....
