— VALDOSTA — As millions around the United States await their tax rebate checks from the Internal Revenue Service, authorities advise citizens to beware of a popular e-mail scam that has recently begun to circulate.

According to Valdosta Police Cmdr. Eugene Bell, the Valdosta Police Department recently received the following message via e-mail:
“From: Internal Revenue Service [mailto:revenue@irs.us.gov]
Sent: Monday, May 12, 2008 11:41 PM
Subject: IRS - Economic Stimulus Refund Program
Importance: High”
“Over 130 million Americans will receive refunds as part of President Bush’s program to jump-start the economy. Our records indicate that you are qualified to receive the 2008 Economic Stimulus Refund. The fastest and easiest way to receive your refund is by direct deposit to your checking/savings account. Please follow the link and fill out the form and submit before May 19th, 2008 to ensure that your refund will be processed as soon as possible. Submitting your form on May 19th, 2008 or later means that your refund will be delayed due to the volume of requests we anticipate for the Economic Stimulus Refund. To access Economic Stimulus Refund, please click here.”
“NOTE: If you received this message in your SPAM/BULK folder, that is because of the large amount of e-mails we are sending out or because of the restrictions implemented by your ISP. © Copyrighted 2008, Internal Revenue Service U.S.A. All rights reserved.”
Police have confirmed that this e-mail is a scam. The e-mail has also been portrayed on national news, at which time it was stated that the IRS does not send out such messages via e-mail.
“Many people with criminal intent will be using the Internet and other avenues to steal money in connection with the Economic Stimulus plan that was recently passed by Congress,” Cmdr. Bell stated in a press release submitted by the VPD. “If citizens receive such messages via e-mail or any other means, they should not participate with hopes of receiving additional money or refund checks earlier than they anticipated.”
Bell added that if citizens have questions about their refund checks or any other tax issues, they should call the IRS directly or go to the official IRS website.

Look like if these folks would spend as much time actually working as they did thinking up the scams, they wouldn't need the scams.

Q. Will the payment I receive in 2008 reduce my 2008 refund or increase the amount I owe for 2008?

A. No, the stimulus payment will not reduce your refund or increase the amount you owe when you file your 2008 return.
