I probably have drama and baggage, whatever that means. But I'm honest, and I don't know any games -- at least, not any that I'm aware of. I also have two very small cats.
Zen strawberries ease stress, but Powdermilk Biscuits haven't ended my shyness, so I'm heart-hunting online. I'm a warrior-poet in training; will you join my quest? Global enlightenment is unprecedented; we'll have to discover & erase the rules en route. I'd like an abiding companion on that long road, despite the song "Ripple" advising "that path is for your steps alone." Shopping, watching, voting are not enough; this troubled world needs zealots of love, furiously writing, talking, doing. I no longer want an ordinary life; Kerouac said "The only people for me are the mad ones." I'm not sure we can change the world, but I'm sure I must try; do you feel that too? Will you carry your protest sign beside mine? Rallies are fun; lectures can be interesting; meetings are tedious but necessary. ¶ I admire service, but activism is what excites me, what I want to share. Archbishop Câmara said "When I feed the poor, they call me a saint; when I ask why the poor have no food, they call me a communist." There are 6 billion people in my family; someday I hope to have dinner with them all. What do you believe in, & what are you doing about it? I want change, not ritual, so the meetings I attend are not in churches. Buddha said the way is not in the sky, but in the heart. I wear my peace badge everywhere. I may burst into song (badly) at any moment; lyrics of Internationale, Imagine, Vietnam Rag are baggied on my shower wall. A funny paradox: "There are 2 kinds of people, those who divide people into 2 kinds, & those who don't." I'm of the latter sort, & my mate must be too; no fans of authoritarianism here. I'm an unofficial self-appointed spokesperson for the Worldwide Progressive Movement; search for my long essay about that disorganization. ¶ I'm a math professor, but that's not what I want to do on a date. That's not even how I see myself now. Decades ago I was seduced by math's promises of certainty, but now I see that only the dead are unchanging. ¶ My political awakening stems in part from dating ads like this. Right after divorce is a particularly good opportunity to take a fresh look at your life, but any day will do. I feel compelled to describe not just who I am, but what I want to become. Will you encourage me in that becoming, as I will you? I won't settle for less. I'm ambitious to remake myself, but we mortals are too weak to climb far alone. Saint-Exupery said "love consists not in gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction." I'm surprised that most dating ads are short, as though finding yourself or the right partner were of little importance. I'm cramming this ad to the 4k limit. It's not quite full, so this sentence is available for rent, payable in sunsets & kisses. Do you share my love of words? Let there be emails to fill the ether; what are you reading, thinking, feeling? ¶ Fine wines & foreign sands do not call to me, but I'm not so single-minded or somber as a saint. When I'm not teaching or politicking, films are fun. "Little Miss Sunshine" & "Amelie" are delightful rebellions against conformity. I'm also fond of sci-fi flicks & romantic comedies, though I haven't yet figured out what that means politically. But if outdoors, concerts, or travel are essential to you, we're not a match. Proust said "The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes." My flat is a mess, so invite me to yours. ¶ Frequent emails are necessary but not sufficient. Chemistry is crucial; penpals in other cities need not apply. Friendship first; but, as Morrissey said so aptly, I am human & I need to be loved, just like everybody else does. "Make Love Not War" is not just my funny bumper sticker; it is heavy as "1984" & light as "Chocolat." Will you argue poetry & social theory with me late into the night, & conspire (breathe together) with me? My beard is negotiable after the third date. - Eric
