William Shakespeare is known as the greatest English playwright in history. His plays have influenced countless artists as well as the lives of people in the western world. Shakespeare was also a master of romance, and this can be seen in many of his plays. The history plays of Shakespeare were based on the kings of England, ranging from King John to King Henry VIII. His most popular histories are King John, Henry IV, and Henry V. King John was written in the mid-1960s, and it is a spectacular play that relates the military conflicts that took place during the reign of King John. Henry IV consists of two parts, and it tells the story of King Henry’s son, Prince Hal, who was transformed from a self-indulgent person to a responsible heir to the throne. In Henry V, Shakespeare gave an interesting account of how Henry V became a respected king after he united France and England.

The Tragedies

The Comedies


Shakespeare’s comedies are very popular among his fans, and they feature an ingenious combination of irony, satire, humor, and wordplay. Twelfth Night was written in the year 1601, and it relates the story of how Viola, a female pretending to be a male, found her long lost brother. Shakespeare wrote A Midsummer Night’s Dream in 1596, and he ridiculed romantic love and other aspects of life in it to show the foolishness of human beings. Much Ado About Nothing is centered on a pair of lovers who are constantly fighting with each other.

The Sonnets is a 154-part epic poem that is dedicated to beauty, love, and mortality. Shakespeare recreated the classic story of Venus and Adonis in his Venus and Adonis poem, which relates the story of how Venus tries to seduce Adonis by distracting him from his passion for hunting. The Rape of Lucrece revolves around the relationship between Tarquin and Lucrece, and it displays a witty use of wordplay and rhetoric.
